Our approach to therapy
How we work with children and families
We believe that children heal and grow best in relationships where they feel safe, understood, and empowered. Our philosophy of care is child-centered, meaning we honor each child’s inner strengths and allow them to grow at their own pace.
It is also evidence-based, grounded in research that shows these approaches are effective in helping children and families. Most importantly, our work is relational: we focus on strengthening the bonds between children and their caregivers, because true healing happens through connection.
We are proud to offer child therapy in Chicago that is accessible for families. Our practice is in-network with Aetna, including Aetna Student Health, making it easier for both local families and college students to receive the support they need.
Chicago Therapy Corner’s Methods
Child-Centered Play Therapy
Children don’t always have the words to explain big feelings, but they do have play. In child-centered play therapy, the playroom becomes your child’s “language.” Through toys, art, and imagination, children express emotions, work through worries, and build coping skills in a safe and supportive environment.
Our Chicago based child therapists follow your child’s lead with empathy and acceptance, helping them develop confidence, resilience, and emotional awareness.
Theraplay®
Theraplay® is a highly effective, playful approach that strengthens the parent-child relationship. Through fun, engaging activities that include eye contact, nurturing touch, and shared joy, children begin to feel more secure, connected, and valued.
At our Theraplay® practice, caregivers are directly involved in sessions so they can bring these experiences home, deepening trust and connection with their child in daily life.
Nonlinear Dynamic Systems Theory (NDS Theory)
While the name may sound complex, the idea is simple: growth and change in child and family therapy isn’t a straight line. Emotions, behaviors, and relationships can shift quickly, especially during times of stress, transition, or trauma.
By using NDS Theory, our therapists help families understand that progress includes ups, downs, and everything in between. This perspective creates hope and helps children and caregivers stay resilient throughout the healing process.
Why These Approaches Work for Families in Chicago?
Play creates safety – In our play therapy sessions, children use toys, art, and imagination to express feelings in ways that feel natural. Play helps kids feel safe enough to explore emotions and build coping skills.
Connection builds healing – Theraplay® sessions focus on strengthening the parent-child bond. When children feel connected and secure with their caregivers, they gain confidence, trust, and resilience.
Growth is dynamic – Our child therapists understand that progress isn’t always a straight line. With patience and support, even small steps create lasting, meaningful change for children and families.
Parents are partners – At our practice, parents are an essential part of the process. Caregivers gain tools and strategies to continue growth at home, creating stronger relationships and a healthier family environment.
