FAQs
What happens in the first session of child therapy?
The first session is designed to make your child feel safe and comfortable. Children often use play, art, or creative activities to express feelings they may not yet be able to verbalize.
Parents or caregivers will also meet with the therapist to provide background information, discuss concerns, and set initial therapy goals. Depending on the approach, a family observation assessment may be conducted to understand dynamics and tailor the therapy plan.
This initial session is a collaborative step to ensure everyone child, parents, and therapist is on the same page.
How long does child therapy usually last?
The length of therapy depends on your child’s needs, goals, and the type of therapy:
Child-Centered Play Therapy: Typically 12–18 months
Theraplay®: Around 6–9 months
Other approaches: Duration varies
Sessions usually last 30–50 minutes for younger children and up to 60 minutes for older children and teens, generally scheduled weekly. Progress is regularly reviewed, and the plan is adjusted to meet evolving needs.
What is the difference between a therapist, psychologist, and counselor?
Counselor: Often focuses on specific challenges and short-term goals, offering practical coping strategies.
Therapist: Provides a deeper, exploratory space for long-term growth, addressing underlying emotional patterns.
Psychologist: Holds an advanced degree (PhD or PsyD), can provide therapy, and may conduct psychological assessments.
All of these professionals can provide child therapy in Chicago, but the most important factor is experience working with children and families in a supportive, child-centered environment.
